For the second year running, the Fondation Thalie is delighted to announce its participation in the 2024 edition of the Art-O-Rama Fair (30 August – 1 September, Marseille) in the “publishing & design” section, inviting designers Samy Rio, in dialogue with a selection of pieces from Atelier Lumierrante (Jessica Boubetra and Jean-Baptiste Lenglet).
As a key event and gateway for galleries to European art fairs, Art-o-rama offers a unique and demanding selection of emerging local and international art scenes. More than 60 galleries and publishers will be featured in this 18th edition in Marseille. At the centre of a beautiful excitement, Art-o-rama offers each year the panorama of an unequalled cultural heritage, an immersion in the leading artistic places of the wider southern region, from Monaco to Montpellier, passing through Arles, Hyères, Nice and of course Marseille.
Guest designers
French designer Samy Rio combines craft and industry to improve the quality of his production, while retaining control over the myriad of durable objects he produces. Bringing together these two diametrically opposed modes of production allows him to breathe new life into neglected craft traditions while tempering mass production. Samy Rio puts his training in cabinetmaking and industrial design at the service of this new hybrid approach, enabling it to pass the test of viability. Simple and uncluttered in appearance, Samy Rio’s objects examine the role of design in reinterpreting sustainable practices through combinations of materials and processes.
On this occasion, Samy Rio has designed and presented a scenographic set. The convertible seats and oak coffee table were designed in collaboration with Ateliers 2/3/4/ architects. This collection now furnishes Lyon’s new medical academy. The chestnut table and chair, made in collaboration with the CHATERSèN workshop, a craftsman specialising in the processing of young chestnut shoots, are the fruit of a vast multi-disciplinary project to promote and protect the forests of the Cévennes. The extruded terracotta hanging lamps, created in partnership with the architectural firm Atelier Senzu, are part of a catalogue of terracotta and recycled aluminium objects that will grace the Grand Palais (RMN) when it reopens in April 2025. The Quasar and Kino lamps, industrial editions, were designed in collaboration with the publishers and friends Petite Friture and From the Bay.
Atelier Lumierrante combines a selection of its ceramic pieces with the scenography and world of Samy Rio. The Atelier Lumierrante was founded by Jessica Boubetra and Jean-Baptiste Lenglet, two artists with a wide range of practices who have been developing a joint sculptural project centred on 3D ceramic printing for several years. In their Paris studio, they are experimenting with this new technique, creating sculptures and objects with unusual geometries. Their creative process blends traditional skills with cutting-edge technology. Their research also encompasses enamelling, which allows them to exploit the singularity of ceramic materials and their aesthetic potential. The works of Atelier Lumierrante are part of a science-fiction reflection on the future of ceramic materials and their uses in the context of new technologies and the ecological crisis.
